She'd lost perspective, trying to manage her caseload, virtually worrying about where she'd move to when her lease ended, and a million other concerns. Thankfully the tension in her neck and back had relaxed after her chiropractor appointment yesterday, but her mind swirled all night long. It seemed to her she'd looked at the clock every hour. Sleep didn't come. If you spend your night wishing sleep would come, consider talking to your soul. Psalms records a lot of soul talk, like the verse for today: "The Lord is merciful and righteous. Our God is compassionate. The Lord protects defenseless people. When I was weak, he saved me. Be at peace again, my soul, because the Lord has been good to you" (Psalm 116:5-7 GW). In three verses, the Psalmist asks his soul two questions: Why are you discouraged, my soul? Why are you restless?" (Psalm 42:5, 42:11; 43:5). And in the second part of those verses he gives his soul instruction and encouragement: "Put your hope in God, because I will still praise him. He is my savior and my God." When you're having trouble sleeping, or just need to settle your soul, here are some verses to speak to your soul:
- With his peace, he will rescue my soul … (Psalm 55:18).
- I will rejoice and be glad because of your mercy. You have seen my misery. You have known the troubles in my soul (Psalm 31:7).
- My soul will boast about the Lord. Those who are oppressed will hear it and rejoice (Psalm 34:2).
- Hold your spear to block the way of those who pursue me. Say to my soul, "I am your savior" (Psalm 35:3).
- When you lie down, you will not be afraid, when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet. (Proverbs 3:24).
- All your children will be taught by the Lord, and your children will have unlimited peace (Isaiah 54:13).
- With perfect peace you will protect those whose minds cannot be changed, because they trust you (Isaiah 26:3).
Today's One Thing
Review the verses above and then take time in prayer. Ask the Lord what words you need to speak to your soul. Write down the words that come to mind and keep them before you. Speak those words to your soul several times a day, and before going to bed.
