The Blazing Trail “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.” Hebrews 4:15 “‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’” John 8:12 Halloween, 2003 will forever stand out in my mind. I spent it in a 17th century villa in Tuscany. In daylight, the castle was beautiful, but by sundown, it felt eerie. The wind howled through the castle’s bleak halls. At night, the main lights were shut off, leaving the maze of corridors pitch-black. If not for our flashlight, my friend and I would have been lost in the dark there. Have you ever been in total darkness? Your eyes may have been open, but still you could see nothing. The Bible teaches that our hearts were once full of darkness, but have been called by Christ “into his wonderful light” (1 Peter 2:9). We now are able to “walk in the light, as he is in the light” (1 John 1:7). God’s Word is the lamp for us in a sin-darkened world. Through the words of the Bible, He illumines the path for us and directs our steps. Just as the Israelites needed the pillar of fire by night, so we need His Word to dispel the darkness around us. Even in the loneliest valley, our Unwavering Beacon leads the way home.
