The Department of Homeland Security's Office of the Citizenship and Immigration Services Ombudsman (CIS Ombudsman) invites the public to participate in the first of two webinar sessions to discuss how U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) is managing adjudications and operations given its fiscal challenges on Wednesday, October 28, 2020, from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. EDT.

During this first session, Citizenship and Immigration Services Ombudsman Michael Dougherty and Joseph Edlow, Deputy Director for Policy at USCIS will kick-off a conversation to provide the public with an understanding of USCIS' current financial situation and how it impacts areas such as the allocation and prioritization of resources; workload shifts; and applicant support services at the Contact Centers. USCIS' experts will join the CIS Ombudsman's staff to relay information and answer questions on what the public can expect as a result of USCIS' current fiscal situation.

The CIS Ombudsman's webinar will be an information sharing and gathering session. Listeners will be able to submit questions and comments (electronically) during the webinar. Where practical, the CIS Ombudsman will share submitted questions (without attribution) to assist USCIS in the development of its training and outreach materials.

Ombudsman Annual Reports: By statute, the Office of the Citizenship and Immigration Services Ombudsman submits an Annual Report to Congress by June 30 of each year. The Ombudsman's Annual Report must provide a summary of the most pervasive and serious problems encountered by individuals and employers applying for immigration benefits with USCIS. The Annual Report also reviews past recommendations to improve USCIS programs and services. Click here to view current and past Annual Reports.

Asking the Ombudsman for Help: The Ombudsman provides an impartial and independent perspective to USCIS in an attempt to resolve problems with pending cases. The Ombudsman does not have the authority to make or change USCIS decisions. Before contacting the Ombudsman, you must first try to resolve your problem through USCIS customer service avenues. Learn more on how the Ombudsman can help here.

Recommendations: The Ombudsman identifies systemic problems that individuals and employers face when seeking services from USCIS and makes recommendations with the goal of influencing change and improving the services at USCIS for both those who apply for and those who administer immigration benefits. In addition to the formal reviews and recommendations that the Ombudsman issues to USCIS, we also work in less formal ways to identify emerging issues and begin discussions with USCIS about how problems can be addressed. Public Engagement: The Ombudsman meets with stakeholders across the country to learn how the delivery of immigration benefits and services impacts communities and to share information about how our office can help. Despite his status as one of the most influential and intelligent Christian authors of the 20th century, C.S. Lewis never thought of himself as a professional theologian. While he was well-read in many types of literary genres, he did not go to Seminary to obtain a Masters in Theology and study a year of Old Testament Hebrew and New Testament Greek. He was not a Pastor who preached sermons to a congregation for many years but a raw, honest philosopher and professor of literature who wrote as well as any Christian of his time could. He had a gift for clearly articulating his perspectives on a variety of issues. Above all, he was humble, in that he had an honest evaluation of both his strengths and his weaknesses. I believe this is one of the main reasons why he is still so enjoyable to read even after all these years. In terms of his theology, Lewis himself said he was an “Anglican but not especially ‘high,’ nor especially ‘low,’ nor especially anything else.” So the theology of C.S. Lewis is not something one can immediately discover by simply perusing a certain book of his to see exactly where he stands on certain doctrinal issues; it is much more subtle and convoluted than that. But in this book, you will find his different thoughts from his many books about certain Christian doctrines and topics pieced together in an easy-to-follow format (Lewis has written nearly 60 books but none of them are on systematic theology). This book offers very clear depictions of his theology concerning subjects such as the doctrine of inspiration, original sin, human depravity, human origins, evolution, intelligent design, theodicy, love and marriage, redemption, grace, new creation, and grief, as his authentic reaction to God after his wife’s death is conveyed. The final chapters also contain all of his greatest quotes arranged and sorted by topic as well as excerpts, quotes, and summaries from most of his books in a quick, easy-to-read, bullet-point format. These last two sections are a particularly great resource to draw from as you can quickly learn about the main points Lewis conveys in his bestselling books.
