The Cover Story | The Pandemic Revealed How Much We Hate Our Jobs. Now We Have a Chance to Reinvent Work | | By Joanne Lipman | For the past year, I've been reporting a book about the science and art of reinvention. At first I focused on people who had reinvented themselves, or products that somehow came back from the dead (just Google the origins of Play-doh!). But the pandemic shutdown brought an entirely new meaning to the concept of reinvention. Instantly, almost all of us had to completely rethink the ways in which we live and work. We reprioritized our lives, reordered how we envisioned the future. In the process, we've increasingly come to the realization that the workplace as we know it is broken. In this TIME cover story, I look at potential ways to reinvent the office, to create a more humane work environment for all of us. Can we give more support to working moms, and caretakers of kids and elderly relatives? Should we expect our leaders to tackle social and political issues, from racism to climate change? There's an urgent need to answer these questions. In my reporting, one of my most alarming finds was just how many people are considering not just quitting their jobs but switching occupations altogether, in search of more flexible and more meaningful work. As Kari Altizer, a Richmond, Va., mom who quit her life insurance sales job to start a business from home with her husband, told me: "We aren't supposed to live to work. We're supposed to work to live." | Read the Story » | Share the cover story | | | |
