The New American Revolution |

By Sam Lansky |
West Coast Editor, TIME |
When Pharrell Williams—the singular recording artist, producer, fashion designer and businessman—approached us with the idea of curating a special project on the subject of Black identity, the question was not if this was something we should do. The question was how we could do justice to his ambitious vision. Although Williams' work has been in the arts and design, he was eager to build a multi-disciplinary project that also delved into health, education, activism and public policy. Over the course of many conversations with him, he expressed an endless interest in how so many figures, across myriad spaces, were working to create a more equitable future for Black Americans.
In partnership with Williams, we assembled an extraordinary portfolio of voices, who appear in this week's issue of TIME. Taken individually, it's powerful to read activists Angela Davis and Yara Shahidi discuss the role social media can play in organizing, to hear from the writer Imara Jones on why trans liberation is vital to the fight for Black liberation, and to see the potent original artwork Hank Willis Thomas created to run alongside an essay from Williams connecting the dots between America's capitalist roots to the oppression still faced by Black people today. But the cumulative effect of these pieces is bigger than the sum of its parts: A bold, vividly realized vision for what a more just and equitable world might look like. "It's what America could really look like if we were equal," Williams says. "We love our nation. So let's live up to what these doctrines say."
Our cover image, a black and red American flag woven by the 23-year-old artist Nneka Jones, captures the revolutionary spirit of Williams' perspective, as well as the many perspectives brought together here. The future has yet to be woven, but if these voices are any indication, there are many reasons for hope. |

1 Oh clap your hands, all ye peoples; Shout unto God with the voice of triumph.
2 For Jehovah Most High is terrible; He is a great King over all the earth. 3 He subdueth peoples under us, And nations under our feet. 4 He chooseth our inheritance for us, The glory of Jacob whom he loved. Selah
