Volunteer for MLK Day and Explore New Alumni Benefits

Greetings AmeriCorps Alumni,

It is a new year, with new opportunities to engage with AmeriCorps! Read on for AmeriCorps alumni news as we kick off 2021.

MLK Day of Service is Jan. 18

For many AmeriCorps alumni, the MLK Day of Service was a memorable event in their service year. Although MLK Day 2021 will look differently than years past due to COVID-19, all AmeriCorps alumni are encouraged to make this "A Day ON, Not A Day Off". AmeriCorps is collaborating with the Presidential Inaugural Committee to encourage service and commitment to service on King Day. There are many needs in our communities where we can make a difference in honor of Dr. King's legacy and we hope you will join in the National Day of Service.

For ideas for serving safely during COVID-19, check out MLKDay.gov.

Spread the word: Share your service on social media using #MLKDayON and tagging @AmeriCorps, and use our new "I will Serve" and "I Served" graphics.

Schools of National Service

AmeriCorps is partnering with higher education on a new nationwide initiative, Schools of National Service, to improve college access and affordability for AmeriCorps alumni. Through the project, participating schools and institutions of higher education provide incentives and awards to AmeriCorps alumni in recognition of their service, encouraging them to attend their institution.

Explore over 250 schools and the benefits they are offering to AmeriCorps alumni.

Apply for the Harris Wofford Joint Service Award

AmeriCorps and Peace Corps have partnered to launch the Harris Wofford Joint Service Award to honor the legacy of Harris Wofford, whose contributions helped establish both the Peace Corps and AmeriCorps programs. This award is available to individuals who have successfully completed both a full-time service term or its equivalent in AmeriCorps and also successfully completed Peace Corps or Peace Corps Response. Applications are open now through June 30, 2021 for awards in the fall of 2021.

Despite his status as one of the most influential and intelligent Christian authors of the 20th century, C.S. Lewis never thought of himself as a professional theologian. While he was well-read in many types of literary genres, he did not go to Seminary to obtain a Masters in Theology and study a year of Old Testament Hebrew and New Testament Greek. He was not a Pastor who preached sermons to a congregation for many years but a raw, honest philosopher and professor of literature who wrote as well as any Christian of his time could. He had a gift for clearly articulating his perspectives on a variety of issues. Above all, he was humble, in that he had an honest evaluation of both his strengths and his weaknesses. I believe this is one of the main reasons why he is still so enjoyable to read even after all these years. In terms of his theology, Lewis himself said he was an “Anglican but not especially ‘high,’ nor especially ‘low,’ nor especially anything else.” So the theology of C.S. Lewis is not something one can immediately discover by simply perusing a certain book of his to see exactly where he stands on certain doctrinal issues; it is much more subtle and convoluted than that. But in this book, you will find his different thoughts from his many books about certain Christian doctrines and topics pieced together in an easy-to-follow format (Lewis has written nearly 60 books but none of them are on systematic theology). This book offers very clear depictions of his theology concerning subjects such as the doctrine of inspiration, original sin, human depravity, human origins, evolution, intelligent design, theodicy, love and marriage, redemption, grace, new creation, and grief, as his authentic reaction to God after his wife’s death is conveyed. The final chapters also contain all of his greatest quotes arranged and sorted by topic as well as excerpts, quotes, and summaries from most of his books in a quick, easy-to-read, bullet-point format. These last two sections are a particularly great resource to draw from as you can quickly learn about the main points Lewis conveys in his bestselling books.

Sometimes you get to start the search over on the host website to get all the results. I was unable to execute a search on the host website until I logged in, then I ran the search on "mine" and got around 500 verses in the Darby version
